Ofosu Jones-Quartey Returns to Philadelphia, Saturday, April 5, 2025
(an earlier version was published in the April 18, 2024 DVI News)
We are excited to welcome back Ofosu Jones-Quartey for a daylong retreat, engaging in community practice and discussion. You Are Enough: Mindfulness, Self-Compassion & Healing will be held on Saturday, April 5 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Unitarian Society of Germantown. For those who cannot attend in person, the retreat will be available online via Zoom.
Ofosu will offer practical self-compassion and mindfulness practices that can be applied in daily life. There will be guided and silent meditation periods, in stillness and movement. He will also provide a restorative sound bath, a dharma talk with Q&A, and a closing music offering.
DVI Steering Committee member John Howell sat down with Ofosu for a closer look at the retreat and Ofosu’s spiritual journey.
JH: What role did your parents play in your development in music and meditation?
OJ-Q: My father taught me music and my mom introduced me to meditation and Buddhism when I was six years old.
JH: Who do you consider your major meditation teacher?
OJ-Q: I met Bhante Buddharakkhita in 2002; he taught me Vipassana meditation and I have been practicing in this tradition ever since.
JH: People know you as a hip hop artist and a meditation teacher. Tell me about your work as an author of children’s books.
OJ-Q: I published my first children’s book “You are Enough” in 2020. This book reminds young readers of their true belonging in the world. My latest book is “Love Your Amazing Self: Joyful Verses for Young Voices”. Each verse in “Love Your Amazing Self” carries a theme that encourages kids to affirm the positive in themselves and their lives, such as Be True to Yourself, Find Your Magic, Stand Up for Kindness, Embrace Impermanence, and Ask for Help.
