Program Description

The world is moving fast, and every day brings new challenges that test our stability, resilience, and sense of connection. How do we stay grounded when oppressive forces pull us in every direction? How do we remain present in our own bodies when the weight of injustice feels unbearable? And how do we serve something beyond ourselves while navigating these struggles?

This retreat invites us to return to the foundation of mindfulness—the Four Foundations of Mindfulness—as a guide to cultivating stability, clarity, and connection amid the chaos. Through Dharma talks, guided practice, affinity group inquiry, and collective reflection, we will explore:

Our Focus:

  1. Resilience Through Awareness – Explore how the Four Foundations of Mindfulness can serve as a refuge for navigating oppression, uncertainty, and emotional overwhelm.

  2. Staying Present in Body & Mind – Practice tools for emotional regulation and inner presence in the face of discomfort and distress.

  3. Connection as Resistance – Understand the power of staying connected to ourselves, our communities, and the broader Sangha as an act of faith, determination, and healing.

This is not a space for solving the world’s problems but for strengthening our capacity to meet them with wisdom and compassion. In these times, mindfulness is not just a practice—it’s a lifeline.

Both sessions are hybrid events, i.e. you can elect to attend either in-person, at the Summit Presbyterian Church, 6757 Greene St, Philadelphia, PA 19119, or online via Zoom.

This program is appropriate for both new and experienced meditators. Everyone is welcome.

Dana (Generosity) will be well received and shared with Ruth to support her in offering this program.

Our teacher, Ruth King, shares:

I weave mindfulness and racial awareness into a tapestry of healing, reflection, and collective awakening. Through my Mindful of Race framework, I guide leaders, teams, and communities in transforming racial conditioning from the inside out. Rooted in my background in organizational consultant, clinical psychology, and insight meditation, my work invites us to turn toward our history with courage and our future with compassion.

A lifelong traveler, I bring a global lens to my teachings, drawing from wisdom traditions and lived experience. I teach meditation retreats worldwide, including at Spirit Rock, Insight Meditation Society, and the Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program. My books—Healing Rage, The Emotional Wisdom Cards, and Mindful of Race—offer pathways to inner and collective liberation.

My voice has echoed through Lion’s Roar, YES! Magazine, and Chicken Soup for the Soul, and my work is honored in Black & Buddhist. Patrisse Cullors, cofounder of Black Lives Matter, affirms, “This book belongs in the hands of every activist, regardless of race.”

Our healing journey is both personal and shared. Let’s walk it together. Learn more at ruthking.net.
