Join Rashid Hughes for practice and discussion via this online session hosted by Delaware Valley Insight and the Unitarian Society of Germantown.

This program is appropriate for both new and experienced meditators — all are welcome. The class is being taught over two sessions, 1/20 and 1/21. Register for each session separately if you'd like to attend both (strongly recommended), but you are welcome to attend one and not the other.

Class Description: The Four Pillars of R.E.S.T. is a rest-centered approach to meditation that seeks to provide people who feel tired and weary with an accessible path to embodying liberation while also considering the reality of the relational, historical, social dimensions of what it means to be human. Each Pillar of R.E.S.T. is meant to skillfully reconnect us to the source of who we essentially are in a way that is relaxed and natural.

First Pillar of R.E.S.T., Relax the Attention & Release

  • an experiential overview of how relaxing our attention and resting in awareness is a direct way to reconnect with the inherent freedom and happiness found in just being.

Second Pillar of R.E.S.T., Exhale All Striving, Empty

  • an experiential overview of what it means to be free of the constant energy of striving, and to abide effortlessly in the freedom of awareness. 

Third Pillar of R.E.S.T., Sense the Silence, Surrender

  • an experiential overview of how our silent aware presence is an accessible portal into peace in our everyday lives and during formal meditation

Fourth Pillar of R.E.S.T., Tune In To Awareness, Trust

  • an experiential overview of how trust directly reveals that the unchanging presence of awareness is not separate from who we always and essentially are.

Teacher Bio: Rashid Hughes is the co-founder of the Heart Refuge Mindfulness Community in Washington, DC dedicated to inspiring Black, Indigenous & People of Color to live with love and courage.  In addition to teaching meditation, Rashid is a yoga teacher, and a restorative justice specialist.  Rashid graduated with a degree in music from Howard University, where he also did his graduate work in the School of Divinity. Most recently Rashid was selected to be 2022 -2023 fellow of the Garrison Institute . The teachings of James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and the music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane are deep sources of inspiration and hope for Rashid.  Rashid’s teachings encourage us all to make time to rest, abiding effortlessly, being aware and awake to the beauty of being alive.
