Topic: An Imperfect Practice

“If you look for perfection, you'll never be content.”
~ Leo Tolstoy

Have you ever described a meditation session as “good” or “bad”? Compared yourself to a sangha sibling whom you’re sure is a “better” practitioner? Blamed yourself for a wandering mind, a lifestyle that causes you to fall off the practice wagon or lamented that you can only practice well during retreats? Or perhaps you’ve decided that you, uniquely are unequipped to practice meditation (“I just can’t stay focused”). In fact, we all have the potential to become “successful” meditators. It’s about redefining what success is in the context of practice, rather than imposing unrealistic, even unnatural expectations on ourselves.

Practice isn’t about perfection. It’s about beginning again with a curious, compassionate mind and an open heart. When we misunderstand the process of practice or overlay it with expectations, we inadvertently throw roadblocks onto our own path. In fact, each of us is capable of thriving in our meditation practice.
